Sigma Mixers for High-Viscosity Mass Mixing

A sigma-type mass mixer with SS304/SS316 contact parts and a horizontal paddle agitator, built with a tilting trough for complete, easy discharge of thick or sticky material. Sigma mixers remain the standard workhorse across pharma and specialty chemical plants for products too viscous for a conventional stirred vessel to handle effectively.

Design & Operation

Twin sigma-shaped blades rotate in opposite directions inside the trough, kneading and shearing high-viscosity pastes, doughs and gums far more effectively than a simple paddle stirrer, which would simply push thick material around rather than actively work it. The tilting trough mechanism lets the entire batch discharge quickly with minimal manual scraping or product loss, saving both time and yield on every batch.

Applications

Sigma mixers of this type, in the 100 to 2,500 litre range, are used for pastes, ointments, adhesives and other high-viscosity formulations across pharmaceutical and specialty chemical manufacturing, wherever the product is too thick to be effectively mixed or pumped using standard stirred-tank equipment.

Finish & Hygiene

Contact surfaces are finished to a food/pharma-grade mirror polish to avoid product hold-up in surface scratches or pores, an important consideration for both cleaning validation and preventing cross-contamination between batches of different products.

Frequently asked questions

What product-contact finish is offered?
Contact parts are supplied in SS304 or SS316 with a food/pharma-grade mirror-polished finish suitable for regulated manufacturing and easy cleaning validation.
How does the tilting trough discharge work?
The trough tilts on its axis to pour the mixed batch out through the discharge opening, avoiding the need to manually scoop thick material from the mixer and reducing product loss.
What kind of products is a sigma mixer best suited to?
Sigma mixers excel with high-viscosity pastes, ointments, adhesives and similar dough-like materials that are too thick for a standard turbine or paddle-agitated vessel to mix effectively.
