As regulatory and safety expectations around containment have risen, the ANFD has become the default choice over older, open Nutsche filter designs for most new bulk-drug filtration installations.
How an ANFD Works
Slurry is filtered through a bottom filter plate under vacuum or pressure, and the cake is washed in place with fresh solvent. An internal agitator then breaks and dries the cake using the vessel's jacket and, where fitted, vacuum, all without opening the vessel or transferring the product between separate filtration and drying machines. That transfer step is where most operator exposure and product loss traditionally occurred.

Because filtration, washing and drying all happen inside one fully enclosed vessel, an ANFD sharply reduces operator exposure to solvents and potent APIs compared to older open Nutsche filters, and is now standard for handling hazardous, high-potency or high-value intermediates where containment is a regulatory or safety priority.
