Glass Lined Reactors (GLR) for Pharma & Chemical Manufacturing
Glass lined reactors pair a steel shell with an acid-resistant glass lining, making them the standard choice for handling corrosive acids, chlorinated solvents and other aggressive chemistry in API and specialty chemical plants across India. Available in both new-build and used condition, they let a plant add or replace corrosion-resistant reaction capacity without the long lead times of a full new-build programme.
Where Glass Lined Reactors Are Used
GLRs are used across bulk drug, API intermediate and specialty chemical manufacturing wherever the reaction media would attack bare stainless steel over repeated batches. The borosilicate glass lining covers every wetted surface, including the shell, head, baffle and thermowell, and protects the base metal from acids, chlorides and oxidising agents. The anchor, propeller or turbine agitator and the jacket around the shell work together to keep mixing and heat transfer consistent batch after batch, even at production scale.
New Build or Used Units
Glass lined reactors of this type are available from 63 litres to 20,000 litres. They can be manufactured to order against a P&ID and design conditions, or supplied as used units. Glass lining integrity on a used reactor is normally checked by spark testing across the full internal surface, alongside a jacket pressure test to the vessel's rated design pressure, and the unit is supplied complete with agitator, baffle and thermowell.
Selecting the Right Reactor for Your Process
Capacity, agitator type, jacket configuration and design temperature range should all be matched to the reaction chemistry, heat duty and batch size involved, so the reactor isn't over- or under-sized for the job. A process data sheet covering these parameters is usually the starting point for shortlisting a suitable vessel.
Frequently asked questions
- What capacity range do glass lined reactors come in?
- GLRs are available from 63 L pilot-scale units up to 20,000 L production reactors, in both new-build and used condition, to suit a range of capacity and batch cycle requirements.
- How is glass lining integrity verified on a used reactor?
- Spark testing is the standard method. A high-voltage probe is passed across the internal glass surface to detect pinholes, chips or cracks in the lining.
- Can a reactor be built to specific design conditions?
- Yes, new-build reactors are manufactured to a specified pressure, temperature, agitator type and nozzle schedule as set out in the process data sheet.
